On our farm in Colorado, I train our two Clydesdales at liberty. That means no ropes and no pressure. They walk beside me because they choose to, and they trust me to give them clear, steady direction.
That's how I work with business owners, too. I won't push you into a plan that isn't yours. I'll walk beside you, do the homework, and give your ideas clear direction, so you can move forward with confidence.
A harness doesn't hold a horse back. It turns all that strength into steady, forward motion, and it lets a team pull together. That's what Harnessing Dreams is all about.
Every horse on our farm has a lesson to teach about starting something new.
You might wonder why I don't share their names here. It's because these horses already have a starring role! Watching my two Clydesdales pull together inspired my phonics books, Pulling Together: A Phonics Reading Team. The books aren't stories about the horses. They're phonics readers that help children sound out letters and words, one steady step at a time, until they can read the horses' names all on their own. That's why I save the names for the books! Our horses inspired something sweet, too. At The Cookie Saddle Bakery, I bake big, homemade cookies right here in Firestone, Colorado, with western names like the Cookie Corral and the Saddle Club, a monthly cookie box. Big cookies, big horses and a small-town kitchen! It's also the business I built step by step with the same roadmap I'll make for you. Take a peek at www.cookiesaddlebakery.com
Clydesdale, strawberry roan, over 2,000 pounds
Our gentle giant loves apples. At three, he made it through a serious eye illness and a scary trailer accident, and he came out as gentle as ever. Today he works at liberty, right by my side. He's proof that a rough start doesn't decide how the story ends.
Clydesdale, bay with a white blaze, the big brother
He's the leader of the herd. He likes things done his way and in the right order. Our farrier has to start with his back left foot, or the whole job gets harder. He would definitely approve of a good roadmap.
Gypsy Vanner mare, black and white, with long flowing hair
She's the most outgoing horse on the farm. She loves people, loves being brushed, and says hello to everyone who walks by. She's our best networker, and a good reminder that friendly, everyday connections grow a business.
Gypsy Vanner mare, black and white, our wise older mare
She's kind, calm, and quiet. She'd rather walk than run, but she always gets where she's going. She reminds us that steady, patient steps still win the ride.
Ready for my close-up! Hair by Mother Nature.
Soaking up the sun while the girls gossip in the shed.
Just kidding, it's our giant leader!
